Tourism is of great importance to Madagascar's economy as it generates the foreign currency necessary for economic growth. It is thanks to the diversification of tourism offerings, created through national and international investments in all regions, that Madagascar will surpass the 500,000 mark for foreign tourists. The high cost of airfares to Malagasy destinations is one of the major obstacles. To address this, President Rajoalina announced the opening of Malagasy airspace by calling upon international companies to collaborate with the government. Madagascar is a country with extraordinary national and tourism potential. Its heritage is exceptional, with 5,000 kilometers of coastline, rich natural biodiversity, and endemic flora and fauna. The fourth largest island in the world, Madagascar is home to numerous species found nowhere else on the planet, including 30 species of lemurs, one of the main tourist attractions. Madagascar is also a key port of call for cruise lines.

Madagascar has prepared a post-COVID Tourism Recovery Plan: the inauguration of the new terminal at Ivato Airport, a €220 million investment, the upgrading of six regional airports to international airports, the reopening of Nosy Be Island to tourists, and the development of tourism offerings for Malagasy citizens. In 2019, more than 375,000 tourists visited Madagascar, spending nearly $900 million. Tourism represents more than 51.3 trillion of the country's GDP, and the border closures jeopardized more than 600,000 local tourism-related jobs. Therefore, $15 million has been allocated to the sector. If the pandemic subsides, the relaunch of tourism in Madagascar in the summer of 2021 will mark a new beginning.
