The promotion of local products is among the support actions of the economy envisaged by the government.
The objective is to support operators, particularly those producing local products from agriculture, livestock farming, and the agri-food industry. The development of the multi-sector emergency plan was announced by the government at the end of May 2020. It includes economic, social, and environmental aspects of the country's life.
Malagasy trademarks can easily be registered internationally thanks to the country's adherence to the Madrid Protocol. The Malagasy Intellectual Property Office (OMAPI) manages the process at the national level. Exporters and designers are the primary beneficiaries of the procedure: They pay only one fee and only need to submit a single application, instead of filing separate applications in different countries. The "applicant" trademark is protected by OMAPI for at least five years. In addition, the registration is valid for ten years. Trademark ownership can always be renewed.
